Obviously this is not the ideal place for real time chats, because of the way the messages are spaced out. I hadn't thought about that.
On the other hand I think it could be an ideal home for First Thursday Group if we make it more of a leisurely, longer-term, dip-in-and-out conversation space. I guess I need to think more clearly about "why" I want First Thursday (and why/if anyone else does) and then I will know better where it should "live" (if anywhere).
Of course I am attached to it, because I have been enjoying the unpredictability of First Thursdays for many years now. I love to see who arrives and then introduce people to each other and see if the have any overlapping interests.
I guess it is that element of personal introduction that makes First Thursday Special - or at least that is what is special about it to me. Usually I have some kind of personal connection with everyone who turns up. I remember Kelechi bringing along a couple of his contacts, and they were very welcome, but that was unusual.
So, on a selfish level I want an online space where it is easy to meet people I know for a catch-up. Then we see what emerges.
Why do I want a space for this, instead of simply catching up on Skype, or google or facebook? Well that is partly the Influence of Andrius and the desire to put things in the public domain. Often people greet me when I'm online and give me an update which has wonderful snippets of local news and personal endeavour, but I am the only one to read it. Sometimes I will ask for permission to share the, and I get the permission, but permission is not enough. Unless I have time, and the right space, to present the information then it still goes to waste. That is a big reason why I want a public space to have my catch-up conversations.
