The CPD delivered in Nigeria in 2013 initially was to teachers in my old secondary school as a contributory service for my alumni association. Prior to that, email exchanges with private providers made it possible to deliver to about 200 teachers across 6 schools. In 2014, with some local contacts, two state schools; one a prestigious school on Lagos Island arranged over 120 teachers to participate in the training, in addition to 4 private schools on Lagos Mainland.
Because of lengthy government protocols, I prefer to deal directly with the principals who have the autonomy to arrange such CPD. Private schools are more independent of government intervention, hence are in a favourable position to respond to the delivery. In total 423 teachers have been trained over the last 2 years with demand for more.
As private schools are more responsive, I will continue to target them but simultaneously inform government schools. The arrangements for CPD is through email exchange which is a challenge for principals of state schools. Committing to certain dates without government approval and mandating teachers to attend is also an issue. Such challenges need to be overcome in order to move forward to bring about annual CPD programme for all teachers, private and state.
My main objective is to raise the awareness of the CPD within the education ministry and make it an annual programme so as to improve and update teachers' pedagogy.
Arrangements are in progress this year but hindered by some constraints which hopefully will be resolved. Committing to selected dates and choice of training module present a challenge which WILL be resolved over time. Interest in the programme has emerged from Ghana, Benin Republic and Ethiopia. It is my intention that I visit all these places should resources be made available.
The CPD is for primary, secondary, and tertiary teachers. In terms of the E-learning module, university lecturers may benefit from latest developments within the CPD framework
@pamela, @meredithkabisa, @elfneh @Nikki_Fishman and @johndada, I hope these answer your questions. The CPD programme forms a part of my private practice besides my full time role in a Southeast London college, which has been developed over the past 4 years. For a full discussion on the available modules within the CPD programme, please email me privately.
