This comment is going away from the recommendation to only discuss tools that are currently in use, but this seems to be the closest topic to the question I want to ask.
Simple background: I've just started working with @pamela and @Nikki_Fishman with Dadamac Foundation. I am not experienced in African conditions, neither am I properly a tech person. At our meeting yesterday, the issue of unreliable/poor connectivity in Africa came up in passing.
We moved on, but I have a question about tools, which led me here. What I'm wondering is whether there exist gateway tools to allow people with only SMS connectivity to access discussion forums (not necessarily this one - just 'in principle').
A quick google search produced this blog post from a Kenyan site, which mentions an 'interactive SMS platform', which enables users to enter particular SMS codes to access information updates. It occurs to me that forum tools designed with this sort of interaction in mind might be useful in the African context.
